Nonetto, Op. 77 in A minor is scored for wind quintet with Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass, matching those by Spohr and Lachner. The work …is typical of 19th century style, including the relatively small role for the oboe in the ensemble. Onslow himself arranged the nonet (as Op.77bis) for a sextet of Flute, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon, Double Bass and Piano — another clue to the lowly status of the oboe at the time! The Horn and Clarinet parts are available in two versions, giving a choice of transpositions. Alternative parts for clarinet in C and Horn in C have been prepared, for those who wish to recreate the original sound of the ensemble.
