Kakarigi, Frano

Born in 1959 in Dubrovnik, Croatia, his primary instrument is the Double bass. Kakarigi is a performer, educator, and composer.

Kakarigi has performed extensively across Europe, appearing at prestigious festivals such as Dubrovnik Summer Festival, Granada and Alicante festivals in Spain, Contemporánea de Tenerife and Schubertiada de Vilabertran.

He has collaborated with many renowned artists including the cellist Valter Despalj, pianist Ilan Rogoff, the clarinetist José Luis Estellés, The Arbós Trio and the conductor Josep Pons.

In his soloist schievements he is known for championing double bass as a solo instrument and he’s premiered several major works including Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra by S. Sankey (world premiere with Sankey conducting), Divertimento Concertante by Nino Rota (Spanish premiere), the Concerto for Double Bass by Hans Werner Henze (Spanish premiere) and Carmen Fantasy by S. Sankey (Spanish premiere).

He has had much compositional work written for him & dedications to him. Several composers have written works specifically for him, including Pedro Guajardo, José López Montes, Albena Petrovic Vratchanska, Sadie Harrison, Mateo Soto and Xavier Pagès.

His own compositions and those dedicated to him are featured on the album Confluencias released by Geometría del Desconcierto (Granada).

As a teacher he has made enormous contributions
– Taught double bass and chamber music at conservatories in Murcia and Granada
– Led masterclasses at:
International Course “Manuel de Falla” (Granada)
International University of Baeza (Jaén)
Bass Fest (Reading, UK)
Ludwig Streicher Festival (Santiago de Compostela)
Barcelona Bass Meeting.

And in what time he has had remainign from all this activitiy he has had many Orchestral Positions including, but not limited to:
Principal double bassist at the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra (1981–1987), City of Granada Orchestra (since 1991), Gran Teatre del Liceu Orchestra, Barcelona (since 2014),
and as a guest soloist with the Galicia Symphony Orchestra and Castilla y León Symphony Orchestra
