Rodolphe Kreutzer (1766-1831) was one of the foremost French virtuoso violinists of his day, also a teacher and composer of 19 violin concertos and 40 operas. He taught at the Paris Conservatoire, was the dedicatee of two works by Beethoven, and his 42 études ou caprices (1796) for violin remain an important part of teaching repertoire to the present day. A number of these studies have been transcribed for double bass by František Simandl and Luigi Negri.
