Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov was a prominent Russian composer, teacher, and editor, born on March 18 (March 6, Old Style), 1844, in Tikhvin, near Novgorod, Russia. He passed away on June 21 (June 8, Old Style), 1908, in Lyubensk. He was a master of orchestration, known for his vivid and descriptive orchestrations that often suggested a mood or a place.

Rimsky-Korsakov was a member of “The Five,” a group of composers who aimed to create a unique Russian style of classical music. His best-known orchestral compositions include “Capriccio Espagnol,” the “Russian Easter Festival Overture,” and the symphonic suite “Scheherazade” — all of which are staples of the classical music repertoire, along with suites and excerpts from some of his fifteen operas.

He believed in developing a nationalistic style of classical music, employing Russian folk song and lore along with exotic harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic elements in a practice known as musical orientalism, while also appreciating Western musical techniques after he became a professor of musical composition, harmony, and orchestration at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1871.

Rimsky-Korsakov’s life was intertwined with his love for the sea, which is reflected in many of his works, such as “Sadko” and “Scheherazade.” His knowledge of woodwind and brass playing, which he expanded while serving as the civilian Inspector of Naval Bands, enhanced his abilities in orchestration. He passed this knowledge to his students and posthumously through a textbook on orchestration that was completed by his son-in-law, Maximilian Steinberg. His legacy continues to influence classical music and orchestration to this day.
