Beethoven’s personal life was marked by struggles, including his gradual hearing loss, which led to total deafness. Despite this, he continued to compose masterpieces, and his music remains a testament to his genius and the enduring power of human creativity.
Ludwig van Beethoven's Sextet in E-flat major, Op. 71, is a four movement work composed in 1796. Beethoven claimed to have written the piece in a single night, though some…
Though composed in 1796, it was not premiered until 1805 and wasn’t published until 1810 by Breitkopf & Härtel
Beethoven was uncharacteristically modest about the work, describing it as a product of his “early days” and noting he had since produced “better works”.
The sextet is scored for six wind instruments in pairs: 2 B-flat Clarinets, 2 Horns (originally in E-flat) and 2 Bassoons.
The four movements are:
Adagio – Allegro: Opens with a simple E-flat triad statement before moving into a dance-like, spirited Allegro.
Adagio: A lyrical movement that prominently features the bassoon in its rich lower register.
Menuetto (Quasi allegretto): A characteristic Viennese minuet featuring bold “hunting horn” calls.
Rondo (Allegro): A cheerful, “easy on the ear” finale with busy exchanges between the instruments.
