The Sechs Klavierstücke Op. 118, composed by Johannes Brahms in 1893, are among his final and most introspective works for solo piano. Dedicated to Clara…
“I am continuously engrossed in your piano pieces, which are so very different from anything you have ever written for piano, and perhaps the most substantial and profound that 1 know among your instrumental Works. They should be slowly assimilated in peace and solitude, and should stimulate not only afterthoughts but also forethoughts as well.. .” (Philipp Spitta to Johannes Brahms)
The set consists of four Intermezzi, one Ballade, and one Romance:
No. 1: Intermezzo in A minor – A passionate opening piece featuring descending thirds and an unfolding, spontaneous sweep.
No. 2: Intermezzo in A major – One of Brahms’s most beloved miniatures, known for its lyrical beauty, nostalgic mood, and tender yearning.
No. 3: Ballade in G minor – A rhapsodic, virtuosic piece with fiery outer sections and a contrasting, warm middle section in B major.
No. 4: Intermezzo in F minor – An enigmatic piece using pulsating triplets and complex rhythmic devices like juxtaposed triplet and duple rhythms.
No. 5: Romanze in F major – An intimate and graceful work with a middle section that derives from the theme of the main melody.
No. 6: Intermezzo in E-flat minor – A haunting and tragic finale characterized by severe pathos and depth, featuring a reference to the Dies irae.
Urtext edition of the 6 Piano Pieces Op. 118 based on the Brahms Complete Edition of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna.
