The words were written by the Bard Will Hopkin for the object of his affection, Ann Thomas of Cefn Ydfa, a farm near Maesteg. It appears first in “Ancient National Airs”, a collection published by Maria Jane Hopkins in 1837.
The original has three verses of which the first and third appear in this setting of the song. The usual English version (Idle Days in Summertime) bears only a remote resemblance to the original and a literal translation by Beti George
