Barret was among the founders of the English school of playing. He remained a technically accomplished player well into his later years, though his tone was reedier than that favoured by the up and coming players of the time.
Cantilena for Cor Anglais and Piano is a work with lyrical melodies and a lively middle section by Apollon Marie-Rose Barret: 1804-1879.
Set on the Trinity…
Set on the Trinity College syllabus from 2022 Oboe Grade 7 Group A.
Barret was born in Northern France in 1804 and died in Paris in 1879, after spending most of his working years in London. He was Solo Oboe at the Italian Opera (Covent Garden) and Professor at the Royal Academy of Music. He was involved in the development of the modern oboe in France and wrote A Complete Method for the Oboe, in which the melody of Cantilena appears as a short piece for oboe with bassoon accompaniment.
