Chanson Triste was composed in 1989 and is both lyrical and sonorous, utilising the full timbral range of the double bass. Long cantabile melodies contrast a pizzicato accompaniment, above a slow arco bass line, developing subtly as the opening material returns.
Written in a traditional influence and influenced by the musical styles and idioms of central Europe, Chanson Triste offers effective musical and technical challenges for the adventurous ensemble, exploring the rich tonal palette that is available to the double bass quintet.
