Bryan Kelly was born in Oxford in 1934 and studied at the R.C.M. and in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. He was on the staff of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music then moved to the Royal College in London, where he taught Harmony, Counterpoint and Orchestration for twenty years. He has also lived and worked in the U.S.A., Egypt, Italy and France.

His musical output is copious and includes many works for orchestra, solo instruments and voices. He appears regularly as a solo pianist and is co-founder of the Zodiac Ensemble.

Comedie Francaise was first published by Phylloscopus Publications in 2002. Bryan Kelly has lived in France and Comédie-Française reflects his affection for the country and its culture.

The suite opens with a Préambule, setting the scene for the Valse, where unexpected harmonic twists are added to the classic waltz beat. A beautifully sad Chanson Tzigane comes next and the suite ends with Pantomime, subtitled “Hommage à Francis Poulenc”. This is a vigorous, rhythmical movement, with touches of cheeky humour and references to popular styles and tunes. Players and audience will notice a brief, stage-door visit to the Moulin Rouge and the Can-Can troupe.
