Description

Comedie Francaise was first published by Phylloscopus Publications in 2002. Bryan Kelly has lived in France and Comédie-Française reflects his affection for the country and its culture. The suite opens with a Préambule, setting the scene for the Valse, where unexpected harmonic twists are added to the classic waltz beat. A beautifully sad Chanson Tzigane comes next and the suite ends with Pantomime, subtitled “Hommage à Francis Poulenc”. This is a vigorous, rhythmical movement, with touches of cheeky humour and references to popular styles and tunes. Players and audience will notice a brief, stage-door visit to the Moulin Rouge and the Can-Can troupe. Front cover: painting of L’Institut de France, Paris by John Newberry.
