Description

Danzón No.3: La Loma del Ángel is a vibrant and colourful work which exudes joy and energy throughout. In one extended movement, its Cuban influences and dance rhythms ensure this is enjoyed by performers and audiences alike and is ideal for the intermediate double bass duo. The piano accompaniment is vibrant and spirited, with driving rhythms pushing the music forward to a happy and successful conclusion.
Danzón No.2 a la Cubana and Danzón No.3: La Loma del Ángel are separate works but would also work together beautifully in concert.
This edition includes piano accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tunings. “My mother’s last two years were spent living with my husband, Michael, and me in the quiet town of Rogers, Arkansas. During that time, moments of history and storytelling enriched our lives. For example, while composing Danzón No. 3: La Loma del Ángel, my mother – whom I lovingly call “Mami” – recounted the story of the church where she married my father. That church, Iglesia del Santo Ángel Custodio, is located in an area of Old Havana, Cuba, known as La Loma del Ángel, which translates as “The Hill of the Angel.”
Built in the second half of the 17th-century and expanded in the mid-18th century in the Gothic Revival style, its history is as rich as the memories it evokes. Danzón No. 3: La Loma del Ángel is my humble way of preserving the culture of a people I was unable to experience fully because of my exile.” [Lourdes C. Montgomery, May 2025]
