The String Trio in C minor Op. 249 is a chamber work for violin, viola, and cello by the German Romantic composer Carl Reinecke (1824–1910). Composed late in his career around 1898–1899, it is characterized by a “Post-Brahmsian” romanticism that blends rich textures with intricate counterpoint.

The work is composed of  four movements:

I. Allegro moderato: A dark, brooding opening with a wide emotional range and rich tonality.

II. Andante: A theme and variations that begins with a quiet melody and concludes with an energetic, dance-like fourth variation.

III. Intermezzo (Vivace ma non troppo): A brief, heavily syncopated scherzo showing Reinecke’s exploration of modern tonal directions.

IV. Adagio, ma non troppo lento — Allegro un poco maestoso: A large-scale finale that begins as a lyrical “lied” before transitioning into a majestic closing section.
