Description

Completed in 1853 with a dedicated to Robert Schuman, the original reception was mixed to say the least: Austrian music critic Eduard Hanslick saying that anyone who “finds it beautiful is beyond help”, Clara Schumann saying it was just “blind noise” and Brahms reputedly fell asleep when Liszt performed the work in 1853. Today this complex, virtuosic work it is considered to be one of  the key works in Liszt’s repertoire.
