Description

Hans Pfitzner’s main work for cello is his Sonata in F sharp Minor, Op. 1, a four-movement piece composed in 1890 and published with his opus number. While it was sometimes referred to as Brahms Third Cello Sonata by contemporary critics due to its high quality and influence from Brahms, it is a significant and highly regarded sonata in its own right. It is a four-movement work which features expansive and lyrical melodies and exhibits Pfitzner’s sophisticated use of both original ideas and Brahmsian influences. The work is known for its dramatic climaxes and moments of surprising economy of expression. It exhibits Pfitzner’s sophisticated use of both original ideas and Brahmsian influences. Despite its opus number, it was not Pfitzner’s first composition.
