After a period of freelance work during which she formed the Mercian Trio—a group featuring flute, oboe, and piano—she was invited in 1960 to serve as the Area Director of the Kent Music School. In this leadership role, she was instrumental in establishing the Tonbridge Music Centre and enhancing wind instrument training across the region. Her work as an educator extended well beyond administrative duties as she continued to nurture young talents and advocate for comprehensive musical education. In 1971, Mary Chandler retired from her administrative position at the Kent Music School to devote herself fully to composition and examination work for the Associated Board. In 1989, the Gloucester-based Oboe Workshop Trio celebrated its tenth anniversary and it was for those players that Mary wrote the Trio 1989 for Two Oboes and Cor Anglais. It was performed at the Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester in 1989.
The music is a reworking of three pieces composed in 1985 and now published as part of the Serenade for Flute Ensemble. Mary made significant changes, resulting in a fresh and characteristic work, reflecting Mary’s own experience as an oboist.
This challenging and appealing Trio, with its jaunty outer movements and serene slow movement, was originally published by Phylloscopus Publications in 1998.
