Only Teppo Hauta-aho would combine such disparate instruments in these two fun duos for double bass and triangle. His light-hearted approach to life are ever …present and these are ideal for any audience or occasion. Aimed at the intermediate bassist, what’s not to like?
Eva’s Valse Poem
Subtitled ‘Duettino’, this lively and accessible piece was written for the young English bassist Eva [Mae] Cowlishaw, and the musical material is derived from the letters of her name.
Aimed at the progressing beginner bassist, there are musical and technical challenges in the lower positions of the instrument, ‘accompanied’ by the triangle. A range of techniques are employed to introduce the bassist to different playing styles – pizzicato, arco, double-stops, left-hand pizzicato, harmonics – and this will be effective both as a study piece and for recitals.
Mikkos Menuet
Mikkos Menuet can be played ‘straight’ or with a jazz swing and does not need a virtuoso triangle player! Composed in 1993, it was revised and extended in 2000 to include ‘Georgina’s Coda’, written for the talented young bassist, Georgina Poad, who is now a member of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam.
“Charming and humorous, it could become a regular item in school concerts, and might even sneak onto professional recital programmes.” (Double Bassist)
“Light and humorous, Mikkos Menuet would be a great crowd pleaser.” (ISB)
