The Violoncello Concerto in B flat major, G. 482, is the most famous of Luigi Boccherini’s twelve cello concertos. It is widely recognised in two distinct versions: the original late 18th-century composition and a heavily altered 1895  arrangement by Friedrich Grützmacher.

This is the version most commonly heard in “historical” recordings (e.g.Jacqueline du Pré). Grützmacher reimagined the piece as a Romantic virtuoso concerto, drastically altering the structure by:

Replacing the original second movement with the Adagio from Boccherini’s 7th Cello Concerto (G. 480).

Incorporating themes from other Boccherini concertos, specifically G. 477 and G. 478.

Rewriting much of the solo part to include more virtuosic flourishes and a larger 4-octave range.
