Davidov, Karl

Karl Davidov (1838–1889) was a renowned Russian cellist, composer, and conductor. Born in Goldingen, Courland (now Kuldīga, Latvia), he initially studied mathematics at the St Peterburg University before studying music at the Leipzig Conservatory. Tchaikovsky called him the “czar of cellists”. He became a professor at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and later its director. Davidov was a virtuoso performer and a key figure in the development of cello technique, in particular the so called “Davidov Hinge”, aimed at improving intonation and control on the lower strings by specific thumb positions and finger movements, and a more flexible wrist and freer bow-hold .
He also composing works such as the popular Opus 23, Romance sans Paroles in G major, At the Fountain Op 20 No 2, several cello concertos and a “Violoncell-Schule” method book, which provides exercises and guidance on various aspects of cello playing.
He was gifted a Stradivarius cello, which was later owned by Jacqueline du Pre and now by played Yo-Yo Ma.
