Buffo Set

RMD1660
Look Inside
Composer: Russell, Armand
Instrumentation: 2 Double Basses

Description

Buffo Set is aimed at the intermediate bassist and is in bass clef throughout. The modern style, within a musical and lyrical framework alongside a strong rhythmic momentum, make this ideal for study and concert repertoire with four contrasting movements offering musical and technical challenges in equal measure. There is strong interplay between the performers, combining inventive musical dialogue within four short engaging movements, enabling the bassist to explore a wide range of colors and textures throughout the middle range of the instrument. Armand Russell has composed four effective and accessible musical soundscapes, with strikingly independent piano accompaniments, and music which is modern but also accessible and approachable. Buffo Set was composed in 1964 for double bass students at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. The first version was for 2 double basses and was followed, later that year, with a version for double bass and piano. The premiere of both versions was at the University of Hawaii in 1965.
