He is in great demand as a workshop and seminar leader and adjudicator in the UK, the USA and the Far East, Australia and New Zealand. Paul has also undertaken research into specialist music education for the highly talented (the clarinet prodigy Julian Bliss number among his pupils), an interest that has taken him to many musical institutions around the world.
He is an examiner and adjudicator and is frequently asked to take part in national events including the Chamber Music for Schools Competition, Music for Youth, the BBC Young Musician of the Year and he is a regular judge for Classic FM’s teacher of the Year. He has also recently co-authored (with Anthony Meredith) major new biographies of the British composer Sir Malcolm Arnold (Malcolm Arnold: Rogue Genius), the late Master of The Queen’s Music, Malcolm Williamson (Malcolm Williamson – A Mischievous Muse) and Sir Richard Rodney Bennett.
Paul’s innovative teaching techniques, especially his concept of Simultaneous Learning, have found support all over the world and combine thoroughness, imagination and practicality; the defining qualities of his outstandingly successful work.
Paul Harris’s “Introduction, Theme and Variations on We Wish You a Merry Christmas” is a delightful and inventive reimagining of the classic holiday tune, crafted…
This piece transforms the familiar carol into a virtuosic showcase, blending festive cheer with the elegance of 19th-century variation form.
Guaranteed to thrill and amuse audiences (at any time of year!).
The work opens with a bold and theatrical introduction, setting the stage for what’s to come. Harris then presents the original theme—“We Wish You a Merry Christmas”—in its recognizable form, before launching into a series of variations that explore a wide range of moods, techniques, and stylistic flourishes.
Each variation offers a fresh perspective: some are playful and whimsical, others dramatic and technically demanding, all while maintaining the spirit of the original melody.
Inspired by the flamboyance of Romantic-era variation writing, Harris infuses the piece with humour and flair.
The clarinet part demands agility and expressiveness, while the piano provides both harmonic support and its own moments of brilliance.
The result is a dynamic interplay between the two instruments, making it a favorite for performers looking to entertain and impress.
Notably, the piece was first performed by clarinettist Julian Bliss for HM Queen Elizabeth II, adding a touch of royal prestige to its history.
It’s rated at a difficulty level of 8–9, roughly equivalent to advanced ABRSM grades, making it suitable for seasoned players seeking a festive challenge.
Whether performed during the holiday season or as a light-hearted encore, Harris’s variations are guaranteed to amuse and captivate audiences. It’s a celebration of musical creativity, tradition, and virtuosity—all wrapped up in one festive package.
