Spohr’s Variations on a Theme from the Opera Alruna in B-flat major WoO 15 is a virtuoso work for clarinet and orchestra (or piano reduction). Like many of Spohr’s clarinet works, it was written for the virtuoso Johann Simon Hermstedt.

Composed in June 1809, the theme used is the duet “Euer Liebreiz, eure Schönheit” (Your charm, your beauty), is taken from Spohr’s own “grand Romantic opera” composed in 1808 called  Alruna, die Eulenkönigin (The Owl-Queen).

Although Goethe accepted it for production in Weimar, Spohr withdrew the opera during rehearsals, believing it to be a dramatic failure. The premier took place in Weimar on January 15, 1810
