Brown’s broader legacy lies in his advocacy for neglected repertoire. By spotlighting works like those in Volume 3, he not only preserved historical gems but also challenged soloists to delve into nuanced phrasing and tonal colour. For today’s oboists, this collection serves as both artistic inspiration and a practical bridge to nineteenth-century style—testament to James Brown’s enduring impact on woodwind literature.
James Brown (1929–2012) was a distinguished British oboist whose career spanned orchestral, solo, and chamber music performance. Educated at the Royal College of Music, he went on to serve as principal oboist with several leading British orchestras. Beyond his playing, Brown was deeply committed to expanding the oboe repertoire, founding the Nova Music series to unearth underrated 19th-century works and bring them to modern performers and audiences.
