What it all means!

Hi. I’ve always wanted to be a musician, from before I even started the piano at the age of 5, and later in life the famous Yossi Zivoni described me as a “born violinist”! I’ve studied at several of Europe’s music schools & conservatoires, including the RNCM, GSMD and the Utrecht School of the Arts, and played with many orchestras and other groups, including tours with Glyndebourne Opera, 2 years with Phantom of the Opera in Holland, and a year with the Dutch Radio Chamber Orchestra. I’ve also performed for the late Queen, (then) Prince Charles, Neil Kinnock and others!
I play violins & violas made by my father, Robert Vale, who died in 1996.
In 1998, for health reasons, I decided to take a break from music and gained a degree in Chinese from Oxford University. Then a few years later I returned to music, teaching violin, viola, piano, theory and running ensembles. With fresh eyes I began to write materials for my pupils – and the Hey Presto! series was born, followed some years later by Top Ten. I’ve loved writing these series and particularly enjoy creating the audio tracks for the tutor books, as well as arranging music for various combinations of instruments.
Other things I love? Gadgets, languages – I have a degree in Chinese and a smattering of several other languages – dogs, (I have a gorgeous border collie, Bonnie), walks in the Shropshire hills where I live now, jigsaw puzzles, the colour turquoise, dark chocolate..!

Containing a huge 50 pages and in full colour, this third book in the series begins with an in-depth explanation of how sharps work on the violin – and later, flats. Violin students are then introduced to new finger positions, keys, scales and arpeggios as well as 3rd position. As in previous books, the characters Presto, Bravo and Poco add an element of humour as well as helping to explain things and everything is introduced using a wide variety of music and exercises. Each lesson is clearly laid out, with note charts, illustrations and quizzes at the top of the page, making it easy for the student to follow at home or in lessons and motivating them to explore new challenges on their own. The tutor is ideal for all ages, giving plenty of challenges as well as encouragement all of the way!
To support practice and build confidence, the book also comes with zip files and online access to the fabulous play-along audio tracks. These now include all of the scales, arpeggios and exercises as well as the pieces in the books, making them more enjoyable and easier to master. As well as the basics of music – pitch, rhythm etc – these backing tracks encourage students to develop their musicality and expressiveness — and they make practice a much more enjoyable experience too! Many tracks are also playable with students using Hey Presto! for Viola, Book 3 Gold (marked in the viola book) – so beginners can play with their viola-playing friends!
